We've moved to Croatia

Unfortunately, I have neglected to post on our blog. A lot has happened since my last post; we’ve moved from Podgorica, Montenegro, to Reston, VA, and, as of August 2023, we have moved to Zagreb, Croatia.

Below is a slideshow of some photos from our first couple of months here in Zagreb. They include traveling by bus and tram through the center of the city (which Papo LOVES!), our kid’s first day of school, an embassy fall celebration at a nearby farm, a pumpkin festival, a fall family photo shoot for our Christmas cards (that have yet to arrive to us — that’s why you haven’t received our Christmas cards!), and a Croatian version of Day of the Dead.

Cetinje

We learned last year just how much rain can fall in November and December; so we know to take advantage of a dry fall day. On just such a day, we took a drive to Cetinje, the historic and royal capital of Montenegro. Limestone mountains surround the city, including Mount Lovcen, the inspiration behind the name of Montenegro; Crna Gora (Black Mountain). And home to the Mausoleum of Petrovic.

To get to the Mausoleum, we had to climb up 461 steps to the top, a challenging task with a toddler who just got up from his nap. Passing the Mausoleum, there's a narrow walkway with a thousand-foot or so drop on either side. Scary for "some" of us.

After, the kids rode their bikes in the center of town.

Grlo Sokolovo - Fall Photoshoot

It’s late October, and fall colors are in full swing. We hopped in the car and drove an hour away to Grlo Sokolovo, a viewing point of the Cijevna canyon and the Prokletije mountain range. What should have been an hour-long hike turned into a 3-hour hike, but in the end, we got to see some beautiful fall foliage, take a plethora of pictures, and the little guy got to witness an excavator in action. SCORE!

Poseljani

It took us two attempts to do the hike at Poseljani (we ran out of daylight on the first try), but it was well worth it. Just the drive through the mountains above Skadar Lake National Park is stunning. Annika was a real champ, hiking down through a tricky and damp enchanted forest and then back up the mountain again with no complaints.

B&B Weekend in Asheville, NC

Julia and I spent a fabulous 4 days in Asheville, NC for Stephan and Eileen's wedding. We were grateful to have shared in this cool couple's exchange of vows.  We wish them all the happiness in the years to come. We also took the opportunity to enjoy a seasonal escape to the Blue Ridge in the fall.   We stayed at the Carolina, a great B&B in Asheville.  Hosts James and Susan prepared magnificent meals and provided expert advice.  We shopped, we hiked, and we took pictures.  And pictures.  And pictures.

Enjoy!
